Frequently Asked Questions about Vehicle Donations
General Questions
What are the benefits of donating my car to Grace Commons?
Grace Commons benefits by receiving a cash donation to fund current ministries and strategic initiatives designed to reach and impact Boulder with the gospel.
You may benefit as well. If you itemize your taxes, you may reduce your taxable income. Plus, you can also avoid the costs and potential risks associated with selling your car on your own.
Who does Grace Commons partner with for its vehicle donation program?
Grace Commons partners with Vehicles for Charity (VFC). Founded in 2001, VFC is a comprehensive vehicle donation program developed and implemented to assist non-profit organizations in their fundraising efforts. VFC handles the details and logistics of the donation process and returns all net proceeds to Grace Commons.
Does my car have to be running to donate it?
In some cases VFC can take your car, running or not. However, it must have an engine and be tow-able. Call 1.866.628.2777 to find out if your car qualifies for pick-up.
What other types of vehicles do you accept besides cars?
VFC take boats, motorcycles and trucks in addition to cars. If you are uncertain as to whether or not your vehicle is eligible, call 1-866.628.2277.
What do I need to donate my car?
You will need a signed, clear title to the car that is in your name. Be sure to have the title with you when you call in your donation or enter your donation using the online form. VFC will also need some information about where the car is located and the condition of the car to assist in scheduling appropriate towing arrangements.
Who picks up my car?
A towing company will call you directly to schedule the pick-up of your vehicle. This usually takes around three business days. You will need to give the driver the keys to the vehicle as well as your signed title. (VFC can make special arrangements if you are unable to be with the vehicle at the time of pick-up.) You are not charged for the towing.
What does VFC do with the vehicles?
The vehicles are taken to an auction and sold to the highest bidder. Grace Commons will receive 100% of the net proceeds from VFC.
This all sounds good, and I’m ready to donate, how do I get started?
Call 1.866.628.2277 or complete the online donation form.
Tax Questions
The questions and answers below are intended to provide general information only.
Always consult with your tax professional before making a decision that may have potential tax implications.
Will I get a tax receipt for my donation?
The tow truck driver will issue a tow receipt at the time of pick-up. This is not your final tax receipt unless the sale of your vehicle does not exceed $500. The receipt you get from the driver is an initial acknowledgement that indicates your name as well as the year, make, model and condition of the car you are donating. It will be your only receipt if your vehicle sells for less than $500.
Will I receive a tax deduction for my donation?
The IRS allows you to claim a tax deduction of:
- The value of your vehicle up to $500.
- The amount we sell your vehicle if sold for more than $500
Please consult a tax advisor to determine your tax benefit.
